Essential items to pack before moving to America


Let me guess what brought you to this page, you got admitted into a tier-1 university in the US? Got your Visa approved? and are about to start your packing but not sure where to begin?

Well don't worry, we at Swadesh have prepared a perfect guide for you to help you get your packing started.

Well first,Here are the things you should carry during your travel -

  1. Your Passport
  2. Your Student Visa
  3. Your Vaccination Certificate
  4. Swadesh Card ;)

Now for the University, Here are the essentials -

  1. Your Admit cards are approved by University
  2. Your Original documents of mark sheets, LORs, certificates
  3. Copies of your Entrance exam mark sheets
  4. I20 Form
  5. SEVIS Fee Receipt
  6. Student Health Insurance (mandatory)

As for the money goes, make sure to carry a loose change of about $1000, for eating/drinking.

All your electronics with an India to US plug/adapter

Make sure to carry some extra winter/summer/fall clothing, depending on the season.

For the luggage size and other guidelines -

  1. The Checkin bag should be 158 cm (62 inches) and the total weight should not be more than 23 kg (50 pounds)
  2. A handbag of not more than 5-10 kgs
  3. Travel insurance to protect against a loss in case.

Now we Indians love food, so here are some basic rules for carrying those exotic masalas -

  1. Any Masala/ spices/oils
  2. Ready-to-cook food (Balaji wafers or Maggi)
  3. Rice, spoons, knives, bowls, vegetables, dal, etc are all largely prohibited and also inessential. You will find these abroad as well.
